About This Speaker: Kate Beirness
Kate Beirness is a leading voice in Canadian sports broadcasting, serving as the host for all Toronto Raptors broadcasts and the CFL on TSN. Her journey to the forefront of sports media is a powerful story of passion and perseverance. Born in Port Perry, Ontario, Kate Beirness initially dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player. However, a devastating ACL injury forced her to pivot, leading her to discover a new passion in sports broadcasting. She earned her degree from Ontario Tech University, where she honed her skills by volunteering as an announcer for the campus radio station. Years later, the university recognized her outstanding contributions by awarding Kate Beirness an honorary Doctor of Laws. Kate was the first graduate to receive the distinction.
In December 2009, Kate Beirness made her debut on TSN, quickly establishing herself as a knowledgeable and engaging presence. She became a full-time anchor on the network’s flagship show, SportsCentre, by 2013. The following year, she made history alongside Natasha Staniszewski as they became the first-ever all-female anchor team for SportsCentre, a landmark moment in Canadian sports media. Throughout her career, Kate has been at the helm for a wide array of major sporting events. This includes the 2012 TSN Olympic Morning, CBC’s Olympic hockey coverage in 2018 and 2022, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, NCAA March Madness, the NBA Draft, and the prestigious Grey Cup. Furthermore, Kate received her first Canadian Screen Award in 2024. She was named “Best Sports Host in Canada” for her work on TSN’s Touchdown Atlantic.
Beyond her media work, Kate Beirness is a dedicated mentor committed to empowering the next generation. In 2017, she founded the HER MARK Summit. This inspiring event connects young female leaders with prominent keynote speakers, athletes, and educational panels to build confidence and skills. Presently, Kate dedicates time to serving as the organization’s CEO. The impactful initiative earned charity status in Canada in 2022. Through her groundbreaking broadcasting career and meaningful community work, Kate Beirness continues to inspire on and off the screen, solidifying her status as a respected role model paving the way for future generations.
