Book Suresh Doss, Community Building Speaker
About This Speaker
Suresh Doss is one of Canada’s most influential culinary voices. He has transformed how diners understand the suburbs and the cultures shaping Canadian food. A Toronto-based food writer, editor, photographer, and broadcaster, Doss has spent more than 23 years mapping what he calls Canada’s “taste mosaic.” He helped pioneer the street food movement in Canada.
Toronto Life named Suresh Doss one of its 50 Most Influential People in both 2022 and 2025. His work shifted the city’s culinary focus away from the downtown core and toward the vibrant suburban plazas that define the GTA.
Born in Sri Lanka, Suresh grew up immersed in street food culture. He worked alongside his mother and grandmother at community dosa stands. His childhood took him through South Asia, West Africa, and Europe before he settled in suburban Toronto. This global upbringing shaped his belief that food serves as a language of belonging and identity.
Suresh Doss began his career in IT before building a respected media career. Major publications, including The New York Times, Eater, Zagat, CBC, The Toronto Star, and The Globe and Mail, have featured his work. The New York Times profiled him for his deep knowledge of Scarborough’s food scene.
Doss is a regular voice on CBC Toronto’s Metro Morning, where he highlights independent restaurants and the people behind them. He also speaks publicly, delivering talks such as TEDxToronto’s Food Is a Family Heirloom and appearing at events like Hot Docs.
As a food tour guide, Suresh Doss leads sold-out tours across Scarborough, Markham, and Mississauga. In 2023, he partnered with the City of Mississauga to create the Eat Here Passport. Today, he serves as the creator, host, and executive producer of CBC GEM’s Locals Welcome.
