Kevin Lowe is a legend of Canadian ice hockey and a true champion of leadership, best known for his foundational contributions to the Edmonton Oilers dynasty. He was drafted as the Oilers’ first-ever NHL pick in 1979. He also scored the Oilers’ first goal in franchise history. Over 15 seasons with Edmonton, Kevin contributed to five Stanley Cup victories. He never missed the playoffs. In 1994, he won a sixth Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers.
Kevin Lowe demonstrated unparalleled dedication as a player. He is one of only 45 players in league history to have played in 1,000 games with one franchise. He was known for his elite defensive skills. Kevin also represented Canada in both the 1982 World Ice Hockey Championships and the 1984 Canada Cup. Furthermore, he played in seven All-Star games.
After retiring in 1998, Kevin Lowe transitioned seamlessly to coaching and management. He influenced the Oilers for decades off the ice. He served as the team’s head coach, general manager, and President of Hockey Operations. In addition, he contributed to Team Canada’s management. He served on the Management Staff for four Winter Olympics, winning three Gold Medals.
Kevin Lowe’s leadership extended far beyond the rink. In 1990, he became the only player to win the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and the Budweiser/NHL Man Of The Year Award in the same season. Both awards recognize leadership and humanitarian contributions. Overall, his work for the Edmonton Christmas Bureau set a high standard for community involvement. Forty-plus years later, Kevin remains the Christmas Bureau’s Honorary Chair. He is a board member for the Edmonton Police Foundation and co-chair for Ronald McDonald’s House Charities Alberta Capital campaign. Kevin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020.
