“Jessica, the title of your book, Everything But Money, is so intriguing and thought-provoking. What does it mean to you, and how does it challenge traditional ideas about wealth and success?”

I’ll be honest, picking a title was one of the more difficult tasks when writing my book. But I eventually landed on “Everything But Money” when it became clear that that’s exactly what my book was about.

Having been a financial counsellor for 7 years now and talking with individuals about their money issues, one thing would always become very clear. Most of my clients’ struggles with money were actually about everything but money. They weren’t overspending, getting into debt, or afraid to start investing because of a lack of financial education or even a lack of money. There were other hidden barriers going on internally (and sometimes externally) that were holding them back from achieving their financial goals.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a single book that explored the connection between money and things like upbringing, trauma and generational trauma, attachment style, and other societal injustices, so I decided to write it myself.

“You’ve built a career empowering people to take control of their finances. What’s one of the biggest misconceptions you’ve encountered about money and financial success?”

The biggest one is that more money or more success will fix all of your problems. As I share in the book, there’s a reason there are so many ultra-wealthy people out there who are absolutely miserable. Money solves money problems, but it can’t solve all your other problems. You need a different toolkit for that. There was one study in particular I highlighted in the book that shared how although money could increase your happiness, what it can’t do is solve your unhappiness. If you’re already unhappy, more money can’t undo that. This was also a personal lesson I needed to learn for myself.

“In Everything But Money, you talk about the non-financial aspects of wealth and success. Can you share a specific lesson or principle from the book that’s been transformative in your own life?”

For me, one of the biggest things that transformed my life while writing this book was how much my unhealed trauma had influenced me from childhood into adulthood. It wasn’t until I did some deep introspection and therapy that I was able to uncover some traumas I’d kept buried my whole life which were often the driving force behind many of my financial and career decisions.

In other words, I realized I wasn’t fully in control of the ship, but instead, there were times when another captain was taking over the helm and steering it in a completely different direction. When I made this realization, I was able to finally take control of my financial but also personal life again. And that’s what I hope is the biggest takeaway with readers. You can make lasting changes in your life and with your money. But to do that, you need to figure out what’s going on inside, break it down, heal, then rebuild.

“Many people struggle with balancing financial goals and personal happiness. What advice from your book can help readers redefine what it means to be ‘rich’ in life?”

I used to think living a “rich” life meant having a specific net worth or earning a certain level of income, because more money means more freedom, right? Not exactly. Money is just a tool. Money itself cannot provide happiness. It can however provide access, opportunities, and security, which is why it is important to live within your means while also working at building wealth. With that said, having a pile of money in the bank won’t make you happy alone. You need to define what truly makes you happy for yourself, which you can do fairly easily by using the PERMA+ model as a guide.

This model walks you through the science of what actually makes people happy, and sometimes it requires money but oftentimes it doesn’t. These are things like relationships, having a purpose in life, accomplishing goals, but also eating well, getting enough sleep, and moving your body. I think with how often we are marketed to via TV and social media, we’ve forgotten how to be happy and think the only way to feel that way is if we buy something. What I’ve discovered over these past few years is I’m happiest when I’m doing the simplest of things like hanging out with friends and sharing some good food, getting lost in a good book or puzzle, working out, or learning something new. Almost all of these things are free or don’t cost me that much money.

“Your work spans speaking, writing, and coaching. How has your journey shaped the message in Everything But Money, and what do you hope readers will take away from it?”

One of the privileges I have in my line of work is that I get to talk to so many different types of people all the time. Whether it’s working with them one-on-one, talking to audience members after doing a presentation or speaking with followers over DM or email, I get to have a very unique peak inside real people’s lives. And although everyone’s different and has their own story, there are also a lot of commonalities too.

For instance, almost everyone is uncomfortable talking about money or believes their value is linked to their financial circumstances. I want people to feel like money isn’t a taboo and should be discussed openly and that they are valuable no matter how much money they have (or don’t have). Moreover, I hope people understand that no matter where they are on their journey through life and with their finances, it’s never too late to change directions and start walking a new path, as long as they are open and vulnerable to making that change.
